Jonas Streng: Jämse Sokens affritningh

Riksarkivet (National Archives), Stockholm

Around the middle of the 17th century, sketchy parish maps were drawn of a few dozen parishes in the Turku and Pori, Häme, Uusimaa and Viipuri provinces. Some maps may have been lost over time, at least not all of the maps on the lists can be found in the places they should be. The maps mirror the position of the villages relative to the main church, and because of this the maps are only directional.

The parish map of Jämsä was probably drawn by the Uudenmaa and Häme Province Surveyor, Jonas Streng. The map is unsigned but the handwriting and other features suggest that it was by him. The villages are distinguished in the map by the use of two kinds of capital letters and numbers. The columns after the village names show how many houses a village had, how many of them could pay taxes and how many were empty. The great parish of Jämsä had a total of 166 houses, 120 of which paid taxes and 46 of which were empty.

The north border of Jämsä was undefined so that some of the villages that were part of Laukaa were also included. Some of the village names are in a form that is very difficult to recognise. The map is the first one depicting the northern parts of Päijänne. Below are the names of the villages listed in the map and their current written forms.

The villages of Jämsä parish around the year 1650
